Chevy Chevelle contests Buick GNX for GM’s muscle car popularity contest
Test Drive
What’s the greatest muscle car GM ever made? There are many answers, of course, and yours may differ. But most will probably answer with one of these: the Chevy Chevelle and the Buick GNX.
Joining forces, Motor Trend and Ken Lingenfelter drive the Chevelle and the GNX side-by-side in an attempt to find out. This isn’t any standard Chevelle: it’s a COPO from 1969, the only year where you could order a 427 L72 engine and hit 60 miles per hour in just 5.1 seconds. With 425 horsepower, it’s a convincing argument.
Still to be considered is the menacing Buick GNX, with its 276-horsepower turbocharged V6, giving it a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds. Both are gloriously rare and incredibly drool-worthy. What’s your favorite? Watch the video above and pick your allegiances.
