Auto-journo, and friend of CamaroSix.com Brian Makse, was one of the many auto-journos flown in by GM to test the all new Camaro at Belle Isle during the cars official reveal, and lucky for him his trip was way better than the team over at Jalopnik.
As Brian notes, the Chevrolet Camaro isn’t just another car for its enthusiastic buyers or the carmaker itself. Indeed, for many owners, driving a Camaro makes a statement about who they are.
Based on GM’s latest rear-drive platform – the Alpha, which is currently shared by the Cadillac ATS and CTS models – the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is said to be shorter, narrower, and most importantly, lighter. According to Reuss, it’s over 200 pounds lighter, model for model, over the fifth generation Camaro.
Exterior styling takes the Camaro to a new level. Careful not to alienate the customer base, it’s very recognizable as an evolution of the existing Camaro, but it’s the interior design that makes a huge difference. Where the old interior left a little to be desired, the new one does away with the retro influences for a thoroughly modern cabin.
Like the ATS and CTS platform-mates, the seating position is low to the floor, making for an excellent seating position, improving visibility out of the low roofline of the Camaro. The new interior is modern, clean, and pleasantly free of those retro touches.
While the new Ford Mustang has set new pony car standards, based on my brief drive, it’s obvious Chevy’s aimed well above the new Mustang and it looks like this new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is right on target.
